10th Anniversary of Family Justice Center

On February 8, 2024, we celebrated the 10th year anniversary of the Family Justice Center (FJC) in Van Nuys which treats victims of child abuse, sexual assault, and domestic violence. The Center for Assault Treatment Services (C⋅A⋅T⋅S) and multiple partners provide services at the only FJC in the San Fernando Valley. C⋅A⋅T⋅S and Strength United advocates, the Los Angeles Police Department, the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, and surrounding law enforcement agencies are co-located at the facility to provide a one-stop shop. The celebration included the grand opening of a “mock courtroom” – an area that will provide child and adult victims the opportunity to prepare for the courtroom environment and take away some of that anxiety they have when they first appear in court. The Ahmanson Foundation provided a grant for construction of the mock courtroom, interview software, and security enhancements at the C⋅A⋅T⋅S. Additionally, Kathy Adams, a pioneer Nurse Advocate and Director of C·A·T·S for numerous years, made a generous donation which was used to renovate a nurses lounge and sleeping quarters.
Numerous dignitaries and individuals attended the event including Paul Watkins, NHMC President; Brian Hammel, President of Northridge Hospital Foundation, Erika Beck, CSUN President; Michel Moore, LAPD Chief of Police; Bill Ahmanson, President of the Ahmanson Foundation, MaryAnn Lague and Kathy Adams, both former Directors of C·A·T·S, Gina D’Aquilla, current Program Manager.

Judy Sumner Dedication and Simulation Lab Manikins

New Simulation Lab Grand Opening

On February 26, 2024, a Grand Opening and Dedication of the Judith Anne Sumner Sim Lab took place in honor and recognition of her 19 years of service at Northridge Hospital. Judith was an amazing nurse and instrumental in training new graduate nursing students. She was a wonderful educator and mentor to so many staff and students. We will continue to enhance nursing education through the new Sim Lab which has high fidelity manikins including an adult man, child, and multi- venous IV training arms. These manikins are the closest you can get to a real-life patient with spontaneous breathing, blinking eyes, pulse, etc. and clinicians can check heat rate, oxygen levels, blood pressure, and other vital signs during various health scenarios and medical emergencies. Northridge Hospital Foundation thanks the many donors and supporters who helped make this Sim Lab a reality. Special thanks to Dr. Stephen Jones who was instrumental getting a gift from Luella Morey Murphey Foundation. Additionally, our thanks to Melinda Henry, Director Education & Training for all her work on the Sim Lab. Click on Learn more for photos.

change reaction mission
Change Reaction Helping Individuals in Need

The Change Reaction provides vital financial resources to thousands of individuals who struggle with urgent needs and hardships. They are able to quickly provide grants to those in need and prevent catastrophic life events. The Change Reaction was founded in 2019 and is helping numerous non-profits including Northridge Hospital’s C⋅A⋅T⋅S program. Below is an example of one of the families they helped:
A patient at C⋅A⋅T⋅S is a nine-year-old female. She lives with her parents and her younger brother. They were living with her mother's father when the child disclosed that he was sexually abusing her. When the child disclosed the situation, they moved out immediately with limited funds. They are now living in an apartment but cannot afford beds. The entire family sleeps on the floor. They requested two twin beds with frames for the kids and one full-size bed with a frame for the parents.
